The first theatre of the world was built at the foot of the southern slope of the Acropolis hill in the 5th c. BC. It was dedicated to Dionysos, god of wine, since theatre was born in Athens through the festivals held in his honor. It is the theatre where the tragedies of Aeschylos, Sophocles and Euripides and the comedies of Aristophanes were performed for the very first time. After many alterations and renovations the theatre presents its roman building phase.
