In a distance of just 300 m from the Parthenon at the foot of the southern slope of the Acropolis hill stands the new highlight of Athens, the Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009. A modern three-storey building houses the findings from the Acropolis, objects of everyday life of the local people of Ancient Athens, as well as splendid statues of maidens, horsemen and architectural sculptures still bearing the colors of their painted decoration. In the third floor of the museum, actually a glass box which receives the dazzling attic light for the best part of the day, one can see the sculptures of the Parthenon and at the same time enjoy the panoramic view of the Parthenon. The museum also shelters the excavation of an ancient neighbourhood of Athens visible through the glass floor of the ground floor.
