If Athens was the city of goddess Athena, Cape Sounion, the southeastern corner of the triangular peninsula of Attica, was dedicated to Poseidon, god of the sea and, therefore, protector of the seamen of Athens. A scenic drive of about 65km from Athens takes you to Cape Sounion. The white columns of the temple stand out on the top of the promontory still showing the sailors the way to Pireus, main port of Athens, as they did in antiquity. At the same time Cape Sounio offers a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea especially awesome by sunset.
