Byzantine Tour

The byzantine period refers to the history of an empire which extends between 330 AD, when its capital Constantinople is founded, until 1453, when it falls in the hands of the Ottoman Turks. A valuable collection of the byzantine artistic tradition of Athens is exhibited in the recently renovated Byzantine Museum, a mansion built in the mid 19th century. The exhibits of the museum include sculptures, icons, vestments and liturgical vessels.

The tour also goes to two byzantine churches of Athens: the Virgin the Fast-Hearing, a small 12th century church coated with marble slabs lying next to the Orthodox Cathedral and the nearby Kapnikarea of the mid-11th century with the typical byzantine masonry in the exterior and splendid wall paintings in the interior.
